About this resource
KEF is a British loudspeaker brand founded in Maidstone, Kent, in 1961 by former BBC engineer Raymond Cooke. Its history spans supplying drivers used in the BBC's LS3/5a monitor, developing the Reference speaker range and introducing complete wireless music systems. GP Industries reports that KEF products are sold through a worldwide network of more than 100 distributors. [1] [3]
Its signature technology is Uni-Q: the tweeter sits at the acoustic centre of the midrange or bass/midrange driver rather than above it. The design aims to make different frequencies radiate from the same point and spread sound more evenly across the listening area. Selected newer models also use Metamaterial Absorption Technology, which is designed to absorb unwanted sound behind the tweeter. [2] [1]
Useful starting points include the compact LS50 family, the LS60 Wireless floorstanding system, the Reference and Blade ranges, and the KC62 subwoofer. For someone exploring the brand, these illustrate several distinct approaches: compact speakers, an integrated active system, larger dedicated hi-fi designs and a space-conscious subwoofer. KEF is therefore worth browsing for both conventional component-based listening systems and setups built around active wireless speakers. [1]
