MartinLogan

American-origin loudspeaker company known for curved electrostatic panels and hybrid designs. Its broader catalogue also includes Folded Motion speakers, powered subwoofers and architectural products, offering different driver technologies for stereo, home cinema and installed listening.

About this resource

MartinLogan’s origins lie in Lawrence, Kansas, where Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland developed an electrostatic loudspeaker concept. The company’s history describes prototypes in 1980, a presentation at the 1982 Consumer Electronics Show and the Monolith hybrid loudspeaker in 1983. The brand name comes from the founders’ middle names, not two separate surnames. [2]

Its defining electrostatic work uses a thin diaphragm between perforated stators, with a horizontally curved panel intended to improve high-frequency dispersion. That should be distinguished from Folded Motion technology, which moves air through the action of a folded diaphragm in a magnetic field. The Folded Motion explanation also describes combining the thin-film high-frequency transducer with conventional dynamic woofers for lower frequencies. [2] [3]

The website separates speakers, powered subwoofers, architectural and outdoor products, soundbars and wireless systems. Its technology section offers electrostatic theory, ESL advances, Folded Motion and bass information, useful for understanding those different families before looking at a model. A product museum, parts portal and manuals provide a separate route for owners researching older equipment. The separate Electrostatic Loudspeaker History link provides another entry point for study beyond individual models. [1] [2]
