ATC
British loudspeaker specialist with roots in professional monitoring and a long-running soft-dome midrange design. Its catalogue spans active and passive hi-fi speakers, studio monitors and associated electronics, with an emphasis on its own driver engineering.
About this resource
ATC was founded by Billy Woodman in 1974 to build custom drive units for professional sound systems. The British company subsequently developed complete monitors and hi-fi loudspeakers, followed by standalone preamplifiers and power amplifiers. Its catalogue remains concentrated on loudspeakers and the electronics that support them, with separate home-audio and professional ranges. [1] [2]
A defining part of its engineering history is the soft-dome midrange driver introduced in 1976. ATC continues to design and manufacture its own drive units; its current EL50 documentation describes an in-house approach covering the bass, midrange and high-frequency drivers. Active amplification is another recurring feature: in the EL50, dedicated amplifier channels power the individual drivers through electronic crossovers. [1] [3]
The SCM50 and SCM100 families connect the company's studio-monitoring history with domestic hi-fi, while smaller SCM models provide another entry into its speaker range. For a visitor comparing systems, the useful distinction is not simply speaker size: ATC offers both active and passive designs, so the amplification arrangement deserves attention alongside the cabinet and drivers. Explore the hi-fi and professional sections separately to see how those related engineering ideas are packaged for different listening environments. [1]
