Roon

Roon is subscription-based music-library and playback software combining local files, connected services and contextual music information. Its architecture separates a music-managing server, control apps and audio endpoints, with Roon ARC providing a separate route to listening away from home.

About this resource

Roon combines music-library management, browsing and playback with biographies, reviews, photographs, lyrics and linked performer and production credits. The company describes a subscription business model and says Roon Labs joined Harman International in 2023. The founders previously developed music software for Sooloos, Meridian Audio and HP before establishing Roon Labs. [1] [2] [3]

Its architecture has three parts. Roon Server manages music files, streaming services and output devices; Roon apps provide browsing and control; audio devices receive playback. The server can run on Mac, Windows or Linux, supported NAS systems, a Nucleus appliance or a compatible mini-PC using ROCK. Control apps are separate from that server, so a phone used as a remote need not hold the complete library. [1] [2] [3]

Playback routes include Roon Ready devices, USB and HDMI connections, AirPlay, Chromecast and other supported endpoints. The architecture page describes independent music in different rooms or shared playback around the home. Roon ARC adds access to the library on the go. For a first visit, How Roon Works is more informative than beginning with an appliance purchase: it explains which computing, control and playback roles an existing system may already satisfy.
