Nagra
Swiss audio company whose heritage starts with Stefan Kudelski’s Nagra I portable recorder in 1951. Its present site separates professional recorders from high-end home-audio components, with Reference, HD, Series II, Classic and Compact collections illustrating different product approaches.
About this resource
Nagra’s history begins in 1951, when Stefan Kudelski developed the compact, self-contained Nagra I audio recorder. The official history explains that the name is a Polish word meaning “will record” and traces later products through broadcasting, cinema and music recording. Audio Technology Switzerland was formed in 2012 from the audio division of the Kudelski group, connecting that recording heritage to the present business. [1] [2] [3]
The current website provides distinct hi-fi and professional-audio routes. The high-end collection is divided into Reference, HD, Series II, Classic and Compact lines. Its descriptions contrast larger, development-intensive products with compact equipment and controls influenced by professional recording. These are the company’s positioning statements rather than independently established rankings of musical quality. [1] [2] [3]
The history section also documents Nagra’s move into home audio with the PL-P tube preamplifier and the later Reference Turntable. Historical products and current collections are kept separate, with older equipment documentation and manuals available through the archive. The professional homepage highlights the Nagra Seven two-channel field recorder. The company says its products are designed and manufactured by Audio Technology Switzerland in the Lake Geneva region.
