About this resource
Boulder Amplifiers grew out of Jeff Nelson’s work in recording studios and broadcast electronics. Its history identifies the 1984 debut of the 500 power amplifier as an early milestone, followed by an Audiophile Edition for home listeners. The company later expanded its manufacturing capabilities and moved into a purpose-built facility in Louisville, Colorado, in 2016. [2]
In-house fabrication is a distinguishing part of Boulder’s account of its engineering. The history describes adding a CNC machine shop and later a surface-mount circuit-board manufacturing system, giving the company control over both chassis and electronics production. More recent amplifier development includes Smart Current Technology, a biasing approach introduced with the 1151 mono amplifier and subsequently applied to stereo models in the 1100 family. [2]
The current product index separates 800, 1100, 2100 and 3000 Series components. Useful compact-system entry points include the 866 integrated amplifier and 812 DAC preamplifier; separate amplification and phono stages are listed alongside them. The history explicitly describes the 808 phono preamplifier replacing the 508, illustrating why the live catalogue matters when distinguishing current products from older reviews and historical milestones.
