Linn

About this resource

Linn was founded in Glasgow by Ivor Tiefenbrun in 1973, beginning with the Sondek LP12 turntable. The company states that systems are hand-built in its Glasgow factory and tested before dispatch. Its history connects precision mechanical engineering in vinyl playback with later loudspeakers, amplification and network-based digital sources rather than a single-format product business. ^[1]

The LP12 remains an important example of Linn’s modular approach, with successive mechanical and electrical upgrades designed to fit earlier units. The company likewise describes upgradeable software and modular hardware across its system philosophy. Its timeline traces the introduction of network players, DSM source/preamplifier combinations, Exakt processing and Space Optimisation, which addresses interaction between loudspeakers and the listening room. ^[1]

The current catalogue separates turntables and their components, network music players, speakers, power amplifiers and complete systems. LP12 configurations provide the analogue entry point, while Klimax and Selekt DSM illustrate integrated digital control and playback. Linn also maintains dedicated upgrade sections, so an existing owner’s route may involve modifying a system rather than replacing it wholesale. Active and passive speaker choices are distinct, with amplification architecture deserving attention alongside the model family. ^{[1] [2]}
